  • What is a DogWatch SmartFence?

    The DogWatch SmartFence is an innovative pet containment system that uses an underground radio signal. It can keep your dog within a designated area, like a yard, or prevent them from accessing specific areas, such as a pool or garden. With the SmartFence, you'll receive text and/or email notifications if there's a break in the underground fence or if your pet's collar battery is low. Stay informed about your pet's boundaries and track their activity with this advanced system.

  • How does the SmartFence work?

    The DogWatch SmartFence, like other hidden dog fences, utilizes a buried 'boundary wire' to create a virtual fence around your property. A transmitter in your house or garage emits a safe, low-level radio signal through this wire. Your pet wears a lightweight, waterproof SmartCollar that detects the radio signal. When your pet approaches the buried wire, the collar emits an audible warning signal. If your pet continues, the collar delivers a mild and safe stimulation, known as a "correction". Through a training program, your pet learns to recognize the fence boundaries and stops at the warning signal.


    The SmartFence goes beyond a basic hidden fence by utilizing a special "communication portal" connected to your home Internet. This portal acts as a central hub, receiving signals from both the transmitter installed in your house or garage and the receiver worn by your dog. These signals provide information about the status of your hidden fence, your dog's collar, and your dog's activity. If the portal detects any issues, such as a break in the boundary wire or a low battery in the receiver collar, it will trigger an alert that can be sent to you (or anyone else you choose) via text and/or email.


    Access information from the SmartFence portal using our SmartFence WebApp on your mobile or desktop. Monitor your SmartFence status, receive alerts, track your pet's activity, and stay informed if your pet challenges the boundary and triggers the audible alert.


  • How does my dog learn where the SmartFence boundary is?

    A DogWatch Dealer trains your pet. The training for the SmartFence is identical to our other hidden fences.

  • Will the stimulation from the SmartCollar hurt my dog?

    No, the sensation caused by the collar is unpleasant but it will not cause burns or injuries to your pet. It can be compared to the feeling of a strong static shock, similar to what you might experience after walking across a carpet in your socks. While uncomfortable, it does not cause harm.

  • Can I use a SmartFence if I do not have Internet?

    The Hidden Fence, which is the containment component of the fence, can be utilized even without an Internet connection. However, please note that the communication aspect of the system, including notification alerts, system settings, and activity tracking, requires an Internet connection to function properly.

  • What will happen to my SmartFence if my Internet isn’t working?

    The Hidden Fence (the containment component of the fence) operates independently of the Internet and functions properly even if your Internet is turned off or not working. While the fence will still function as intended, you will not receive notification alerts, system settings, and activity tracking until your Internet connection is restored.

  • Can I use a SmartFence if I do not have a smartphone?

    You can still receive text message and/or email alerts, and access your SmartFence WebApp profile from any computer or internet-enabled device.

  • Is the SmartFence WebApp available on both iPhone and Android devices?

    Yes, the SmartFence WebApp works on both iPhone and Android devices. The WebApp is not an “App” that you download in the App Store or Play Store. Instead, it is a progressive web app, accessible via any internet browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.). The WebApp can be saved to the home screen of your mobile device for easy access.   • What happens when my dog’s SmartCollar travels out of range of the Communication Portal?

    The DogWatch SmartCollar is designed with the understanding that your pet will probably spend time in parts of the yard that may be beyond the transmission range of your SmartFence Communication Portal. That’s OK! The SmartCollar will reconnect and send updates when your dog comes back into the communication range of the Portal.

  • What if I do not have an extra Ethernet port on my router?

    SmartFence requires the use of an Ethernet port. You may be able to add ports to your router by connecting it to an Ethernet switch. These devices should be available at stores such as Staples® or Best Buy®.
